So. Now we know. San Andreas is NOT Los Angeles, it's a whole state. Los Santos, on the other hand is, to all intents and purposes, LA. The game's two other cities, San Fierro and Las Venturra are based on San Francisco and Las Vegas respectively. There'll be countryside between the three main areas, each of which is roughly the same size as the whole of Vice City. Big, in other words. Overall, the game will be an incredible four to six times the size of its predecessor.
Main character Carl Johnson is going to have his work cut out. Returning to his old haunts after five years in the Liberty City slammer, and blamed by his older brother Sweet for younger bro' Brian's accidental death, he'll be making his way through an early 90's streetscape besieged by rival gangs.
The most significant gameplay changes are a new stamina meter, meaning you need to eat, and massively improved building interiors. You'll be able to commit burglary now, or run a casino in Las Venturra. If you're feeling less ambitious you can just gamble away your ill-gotten gains on the tables in LV.
Brilliantly, improved AI means you can recruit a gang, the Orange Grove Families, and drag members along on missions. Up to four people can complete a drive-by mission, for instance.
Looks like the screenshot of the driveby isn't in a cut screen. Looks like you can actually do that in game. The casino idea seems great and so does having more detailed interiors, I can't wait =).

But what of the sequel to the biggest PS2 game of all time? Will it be at the show? Unlikely - and this is despite a confirmed (and looming) release date of 22 October. Rockstar are notoriously secretive and did exactly the same thing with Vice City - zero presence at E3 but a game that still made its deadline. We've been told that Rockstar will have "a surprise" at E3 but this could just as well be the announcement that they're releasing the original GTA (in glorious top-down-o-vision) on PSP or the first screenshots of The Warriors, their Manhunt-like gang game based on the famous 1970s movie. Our money's on the PSP announcement, the display of a Warriors logo and two (v.dark) screenshots and precisely nothing on San Andreas - except maybe a reaffirming of the now slightly laughable 'Sony golden-handcuffs' deal. We hear there'll be a proper GTA announcement in June. Whatever the deal, we'll be there to bring it to you first.
From Rockstar Games website:
GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS ANNOUNCED
Rockstar Games is pleased to announce Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the next iteration in the globally successful Grand Theft Auto franchise. Developed by world-class designers Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be available exclusively for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and is expected to be in stores in North America on October 19, 2004 and in Europe on October 22, 2004. "In the past couple of years, we have put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure we do everything possible to exceed people's expectations with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," stated Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. "Even though we still have eight months to go, we are starting to become very proud of what we have achieved and we can't wait to get the game into players' hands." Leslie Benzies, President of Rockstar North, stated, "We are extremely humbled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values."
Over 30 million units of the Grand Theft Auto franchise have been shipped to date, including over 11.5 million units of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and over 10.5 million units of Grand Theft Auto 3.
Quoted from Rockstar
Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers.
Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets."
What we have found
San Andreas isn't just one city. It is three, Los Angeles (Los Santos), San Fransisco (San Fierro) and Las Vegas (Las Ventura). From numerous articles and screenshots we have gathered the following information.
.Brand new graphics engine meaning getting the most for Playstation 2's hardware
.Fully rendered interiors and more of them
.Restaraunts
.Casino's
.Past Grand-Theft-Auto characters make an appearance
.Famous voice actors .Much better cop and pedestrian AI, they're not as stupid
.Four-person drive-bys are possable
.You can rob houses
.You must eat to stay healty and maintain stamina. If you eat to much you get fat, if you don't eat you get skinny, perhaps die?
.The city reacts to your characters health and appearance, pedestrians will make fun of you if you are fat
.You can go to the gym to work out
.Ability to swim. For how long we don't know, maybe only in shallow water.
.News weapons and re-made old weapons
.Better car handling
.More transport, even a public transport system
