Sendo X >>>>

Sendo today unveiled the Sendo X - a smartphone based on the Nokia Series 60 platform. Coming in a candybar form-factor, the Sendo X features many enhancements to the typical Series 60 platform, including the "Sendo Now!" screen, which allows users to customise a special "home" screen.

Most smartphones are not very practical when it comes to being used as a phone. The Sendo X differs from them by being lightweight (at only 120g) and physically small. It also includes a 176x220 resolution 65K color TFT screen, similar to the upcoming Siemens SX1 and Nokia 6600 phones, which are also based on the Series 60 platform. Additionally, Sendo has integrated 64 MB of Flash memory, with up to 32 MB from that actually available to users, into the Sendo X. This is much more than other Series 60 devices. Users will also be able to expand memory by using MMC and SD cards.

As with nearly all smartphones on the market today, the Sendo X has an integrated digital camera. It offers integrated flash, red-eye reduction, and a 4x zoom. Sendo has utilised a graphics co-processor to allow for a smooth real-time camera viewfinder on the phone's display. The graphics co-processor will also be used for playing back video files using the RealOne player. The RealOne player can playback videos in in H.263, MPEG4, and RealVideo formats. The Sendo X will also be able to personalise pictures with features such as captions, clip art, morphing, and framing. Full MMS messaging is built-in, so that users can share pictures.

The audio features of the Sendo X are amazing. Not only does it feature a whopping 64 voice polyphonic system, but you can also record your own ringtones, all of which are played back through a "scientifically designed dual acoustic chamber speaker system". While there was no mention of a speakerphone in the press release, it seems likely that the Sendo X would have one, especially since it can play back MP3 files through the speaker.

As you may know by now, we here at MobileBurn are very picky when it comes to connectivity. It's lucky then that the Sendo X is one of the most connected phones to be released. It features tri-band GSM, GPRS, Bluetooth (with headset support), infra-red, and USB support. The Sendo X also handles web formats such as HTML 4.2, Frames, WAP 2.0, XHTML MP and Security (SSL and WTLS). Support for up to six email accounts and full synchronization functions are also included, as well as viewers for over 30 file formats. Being a Series 60 phone, the Sendo X can handle all the Java and Symbian applications available on the market today, which means a great library of software is already available for it.

So, there you have it. A great little smartphone from Sendo, which has almost all the features we could ask for. Will it upstage the 6600 and SX1? I'm not sure, but it's certainly nice to see a new entrant to the smartphone arena.

Sendo claims that the Sendo X should start shipping to some markets by the end of 2003.
