при попытке установить некоторые проги появляется окно "Can't run 16-bit Windows program", в котором написано "Cannot find ПУТЬ\setup.exe (or one of its components). Check to ensure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." _
переустановка не помогает.

Список программ где?
А в целом ряд программ не умеют работать с NFTS с длинными именами файлов и т.д. Судя по всему это как раз твоя проблемма. Список поможет уточнить и м.б. установить их в обход.

Возможно проблема в пути ко временным файлам, по умолчанию это
z:\"Documents and Settings"\"Имя пользователя"\ и т.д.
Более подробно эта проблема описана в фак'е по XP/NT2000.

Пути ко временным каталогам можно поменять так:
System Properties, Advanced, Environment. Меняете пути к TEMP и TMP на C:\WINDOWS\TEMP, и всё

это я уже пробовал. не помогло.

RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, modify the path statement to include the XXX folder specified in Setup. Follow these steps:


1.At the prompt about having Setup modify startup files, click Manual.
2.In the %Windir%\System32\Autoexec.nt file, insert (or append) a path statement to include the XXX folder specified in Setup.

This allows 16-bit Aldus programs like XXX to run after the 16-bit subsystem is restarted.
