Разница в производительности никого не волнует уже давно.. только старых гиков. Покупают "процессор-самсунг" а не ПэВМ. ;-)
Маркетинговая машина все красочно опишет! Хотя с маркетингом у голубого брата полутчще будет. ;-)

A few years ago AMD was applauded for keeping its sockets simple, with all of its processor offerings available for socket A. More recently AMD came out with sockets 754, 939, and 940, with some processor lines spanning multiple sockets. AMD has taken flak for this lack of organization, and will make an effort to remedy this problem by replacing its three current sockets with two new sockets in the coming year. The new sockets will be called Socket M2 and Socket F, where M2 will be a 940-pin socket on which all of AMD's desktop processors will sit, and F will be a 1,207-pin socket for all of AMD's higher-end server offerings. Socket M2 will be the less expensive option, and will support all of AMD's desktop processor lines: Sempron, Athlon 64, and Opteron 100. Last week it was said that the dual-core 100 series Opterons will be released for Socket 939 in the third quarter of this year; so, Opteron 100s are now considered by AMD as workstation and low-end server processors, and are therefore slated for the transition to M2 with their lower-end Athlon 64 brethren. All other Opteron lines will be upgaded to the 1,207-pin Socket F platform, which is a suspiciously large increase in pin count. The new pins must be intended for some purpose--if not for initial products, then for some planned future products. Perhaps the platform will support quad-channel DDR instead of the expected dual-channel DDR support ... or perhaps the new socket is simply better designed for power distribution in anticipation of quad-core Opterons, which will undoubtedly require a lot of power. It is nice that AMD is working to consolidate its sockets, since that means less work for motherboard manufacturers and reduced prices through economies of scale, which means better products at lower costs.

Мне понравились 1207 "ног"... неудивительно почему подход к сокету меняется с мамы/папы на простой контакт..

Кстати Интел тоже зеоны переводит на контактный тип (уж простите мне введение терминов %-))) сокета - на столе валяется Bensley - новая серверная платформа (лонч будет в районе 14й недели сего года), дык камни LGA-771.. :o)
