corrected this by going into the registry and removing the following 4
branches:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Cdr4_2K
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Cdralw2k
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Cdralw2k
After rebooting I got a message saying that some other values in the
registry were incorrect and windows had corrected them. These were where
the actual values I'd deleted were being used for each CDROM device.
Upperfilter and Lowerfilter were the other values I believe. I rebooted
again and everything was back to normal. I could see both my recorder and
DVD-ROM.
